William D. Hughes has been a trial lawyer since
1974. He works on litigation matters involving the
Federal False Claims Act, antitrust, intellectual
property (patents, trademarks, copyrights,
licensing), "insurance bad faith" and coverage
disputes, products liability, directors and
officers' liability (D&O), employment practices,
construction defect, and real estate and all aspects
of maritime law including trial, appeal and
monitoring services. Mr. Hughes has served as a San
Diego Superior Court Judge Pro Tem (trial and
settlement conference judge) and an arbitrator on
the panels of the San Diego County Superior Court
and American Arbitration Association. He is admitted
to practice in the States of California and
Massachusetts; all Federal District Courts within
the States of California and Massachusetts; the
First and Ninth Circuit Courts of Appeal; and the
United States Supreme Court. He is a member of the
Maritime Law Association of the United States
(Proctor in Admiralty), a graduate of Boston College
(B.S., Economics, 1970) and Boston College Law
School (J.D., 1973), and served on active duty as a
Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy JAG Corps from 1973-77.
Mr.
Hughes has worked on cases in 22 states, Washington,
D.C., Guam, England, France, Holland, Slovenia and
Sweden.

Randall
M. Nunn is a graduate of the University of
California, Los Angeles (B.A. 1980) and the
University of California, Davis, School of Law (J.D.
1983). A litigation and trial attorney since 1983,
a substantial portion of his practice is devoted to
defending insurance bad faith and coverage lawsuits
and preparing coverage opinions. Mr. Nunn is a
member of the Defense Research Institute, the
Association of Southern California Defense Counsel
and the Tort and Insurance Practice Sections of the
American Bar Association.

Kenneth Purviance was admitted to the bar in
1986 after attending McGeorge School of Law,
University of the Pacific, graduating with
distinction in 1986. Mr. Purviance has been a
litigator since 1986. His experience includes the
defense of insurance bad faith and coverage actions,
as well as admiralty, real estate, construction
defect and personal injury litigation.

Melissa K. Mixer was admitted to the bar in 1993
after attending the University of San Diego, where
she received the American Jurisprudence Award for
Business Planning and the highest class grades in
Insurance Law and Advanced Estate Planning. Her
practice includes the defense of insurance bad
faith, breach of contract, product liability and
maritime matters.

John
D. Culver, Jr. has been a trial lawyer since 1995. John
comes to Hughes & Nunn following a 28 year career at a major
automobile, property & casualty, life and financial services
insurance company. He brings a background in claims,
management and corporate law.
His
practice areas include a mix of insurance, business
transactional/litigation and employment matters. This area
includes but is not limited to first and third party
coverage, insurance bad faith, claims handling, directors &
officers liability (D&O), premises liability,
uninsured/underinsured motorist, products liability, breach
of contract, real estate non-disclosure and construction
defect issues.
Mr. Culver
is licensed to practice in California and the U.S.D.C.,
Southern District of California. He received his Bachelor
of Arts in Accounting from National University (B.A. 1983)
and his Law Degree from Thomas Jefferson School of Law
(J.D., 1993). He also volunteers his time as a Court
Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) for children through the
non-profit organization –
Voices for Children.
